Gee, I'm so tired I'm not gonna write anything.

Edit: ok, less tired now. I think it would be cool to explain a little about why I chose to put horns on Jesus' head.

This is based on the recently discovered painting of Salvator Mundi (Saviour of the World), by Leonardo da Vinci. When I saw the painting, I was immediately fascinated. Not only by the beauty of the painting, but also the subtle mystery it carries, Jesus' otherwordly face, the limpid transparency of the crystal ball. It was definitely magic.

Then I decided to make a pagan version of that painting. I think horns go very well with him. I also think it's fun to play with the christian conception that horns are something evil, of the devil - always remembering that Chistianity took the old sacred pagan horned gods of nature and turned them into the Devil.

Horns are an obvious symbol of power and strenght, and have the same symbolic value as the crown. Even in biblical symbology, they symbolize the power of a king. They are a connection to the Divine above, like a fire on one's head.

The ham's horns are related to leadership (Aries, the ham, is the first sign of the zodiac, and also corresponds to the Emperor tarot card), and are a powerful Solar symbol (unlike the bull's horns, that are the opposite, and have to do with moon and femininity). Jesus is a Solar Messiah. Besides that, they are shaped like a spiral, which I consider one of the most powerful symbols. The spiral is the base of all of the universe's movements - from planets, stars and galaxies to the little natural forms, like plants growing, seashells, waves, snails, tendrils (and the curls on Jesus' hair)... the Divine Proportion. It's also the movement of ascending, illumination, interiorization and connection to the Divine.

That said, I consider horns to be most appropriate to crown a Saviour of the World, and connect him as well to the ancient gods of nature.

he definitely has a more distant look, mysterious and divine. an act of inspiration. while it is disappointing that everyone has to try and take "risks" this truly is a beautiful piece.
i'm not religious, but iv'e always had a fondness for christianity from a mythological scope.
a shame a lot of people only like such art because it "compromises" the sensibilities of others.
marvelous work. definitely going to favorite this

Oh, Aeryael, you and your drawings are just amazing! :)

Hey, did you tried to make a Jesus with boobs?
because, I don't know, there is something on his breast that remembered that.

Could be a nice idea, though............... :P Or not?

Haha, I personally didn't - but apparently boobs are suggested on the original painting, I've read somewhere that it was intended that this Salvator Mundi looked androgynous =)
Mmmmm Jesus boobs...
